I have over 100+ playlists on
Spotify of either: a specific time or person I know in my life, genres and moods, and referenced from Youtube videos. I don't play instruments nor make music but want to learn how to do so.
what kind of music do you listen to?
I'm all over the place but do like these genres: kayokyoku, city pop, japanese new wave and post-punk, russian post-punk and rock, (cloud) rap/ hip-hop, alternative rock and post-rock, etc.
I'm not the best at explaining things TBH but below are my overviews of the artists I like a lot.
yellow magic orchestra/ ymo
I found out about them through a tumblr blog in summer 2017 and it's wild that they changed the course of music history. RIP Mr. YT and Professor. :'((
I enjoyed the hyperfixation I had about them from that time to 2019 before I found another band with a similar yet different approach to electronic music. From Takahashi's intense drumming and soothing vocals, Sakamoto's compositions and philosophy, and Hosono's eclectic musical style and notability, their influence is vast and probably your favorite artist's fav or are connected in a way somehow. I've listened to most of their discography and unfortunately haven't really listened to Technodon but I'll get to it someday.
susumu hirasawa/ p-model
Like many people, I found out about him thanks to the Berserk and Paprika soundtracks (around mid 2017) but hadn't delved more into his work until around a year or so later in early 2019. I wish I found out more about his discography sooner but better late than never. Please listen to more of Susumu Hirasawa's discography. :)
I kept seeing "P-Model" pop up when I read more on Hirasawa and listening to the band piqued my interest in music as I hadn't listened to albums on their anniversary or gone through all of the discography I could find before with other artists as much. I don't know how to describe why I like their music in a lot of technical terms but basically it feels like crack to me despite not knowing what's being said sometimes. I found out about them during my last semester of high school and I'm glad they have more recognition now. If you like DEVO and want to get into 80s Japanese music beyond anime soundtracks and obvious pop artists, this is the music for you.
I don't know why I didn't delve into Hirasawa's discography when I first heard his songs but I'm glad I did regardless. His music can be hard to describe as he has prog rock and philosophical influences along with his electropop style but essentially it's experimental and progressive.
