bike experience

Ever since joining my alma mater's bike club and being on their rides, I've learned how cyclists have had to navigate around the city and it has opened up another world to hopefully explore more of. 😯
These rides are the highlight of many I've done since spring 2025.

Mar 26 2025: Ride 2 Hermann
Destination: Hermann Park
Miles biked? 4+ miles
This was my 1st official ride with my alma mater's bike club, although the last one with the Austin St Bike Lane as it's being removed due to "safety reasons". I even wrote an article about it for my university's student-run newspaper group, as that's such a disservice to citizens. So much for "safety first" 😒. Anyway, it was nice to be able to bike more with the support of group than just around a building although scary at first, knowing how car drivers can be.

Jul 18 2025: Bat Ride!
Destination: Waugh Drive Bat Colony
Miles biked? 2.7+ miles
The long-awaited ride to see bats has finally arrived after days of rain happening on the day of event. It was cool to see the bats as I was surprised when I first heard about them living here, although I went home later than usual... Anyway, flat tires and more pit stops occurred during this group ride + got to hear more facts about them 🦇 from the tour guide. There were several inclines/declines on the way there and back, so that was definitely a workout for the legs as well as cardio. 💪😮‍💨

Oct 5 2025: Scenic Sunday!
Destination: Tacos A Go Go
Miles biked? 8.86 miles
The nearest bike trail next to my alma mater has several closures where it'd be easier to go to the Heights and had to detour, which added ~2 miles. This group ride went well and had more stops + less incline/hills than usual, as we had some people who are new to cycling and didn't want to leave them too far behind/be hard on them. I didn't eat anything so I had their Al Pastor tacos and they were delish, although I ordered a bit too much 😅 so I gave one away and saved another for later.

Oct 12 2025: Food Delivery Rush
Destination: Customer drop off locations
Miles biked? 7.95 miles
Food delivery on a bike in a car-centric city? Inconvenient but possible. I usually stay within the downtown area and a bit of nearby neighborhoods, although I have been branching out a bit more recently now that I'm using Strava. It has been a good challenge to break out of my comfort zone, although have had my fair share of close calls every now and then + decided to record them when possible. I delivered 3-4 orders with that route and omw to the receive the 3rd order to deliver, I fell over a road bump in a bike lane smh but thankfully, didn't scrape myself too much. 🤕 Also looking back, the route kinda looks like a weird boot lol
